While most governments did very little with regard to the fate of Europe's Jewish community, there are examples of strength and defiance in the face of the Nazis' brutal policies.  Those individuals, groups, and nations that chose to act even in the face of perilous reprisals were able to save thousands who otherwise would have perished.
My mother did not what to leave Breslau, especially to go to Shanghai.  If my older brother had not fled to Shanghai on his own in 1938, forcing my mother to give in to be near her first-born son, I'm sure that I would not be alive today.  We were among the last to get out.
