An Art Consultant Abroad: Sarah Belden of SBFA

Sarah Belden, an artist advisor, curator, and dealer. Sarah Belden's professional life can be summarized by one word: Bold. Sarah quit her job when she was still in her twenties.

Director at a prestigious contemporary art gallery in Chelsea (NYC), to relocate to Berlin to launch Curators Without Borders, her own pioneering gallery.

Platform for experimentation in curatorial practice.

To fund the gallery, Sarah secured a Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof financial backer -- a major collector from NYC -- and consistently curated gallery shows that were both elegant and sophisticated.

Berlin's high-conceptual standards make it extremely cutting-edge. During this time, Sarah organized exhibitions that included a number of young artists

These people have gone on to receive critical acclaim.

In one of her most provocative exhibitions, Invisible Invincible, Sarah included a work by Polish artist Agnieszka Kurant, a live parrot that was

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum eventually granted a commission to Kurant to create The

They are also more commodifiable then traditional white cube gallery collections. Although this made her work as a dealer more challenging but it also bolstered Sarah's reputation in the

Berlin art scene as an promising young curator and gallerist.

Sarah also exhibited Daniel Knorr (Romania's representative at the 51st Venice Biennale), and two young Canadians at Curators Without Borders

The Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Sarah created an event live, titled Opening and Closing by David Levine, a cross-disciplinarian artist. Levine

SB: As you are aware that my Berlin gallery  Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof had to close in 2008 due to the financial crisis. There was a silver lining in the whole thing however.

The possibility of moving into Spain together with my husband (we were previously in a long term relationship) I was able to settle in Madrid with my husband. When he finished his Ph.D.,

He was offered a position in the University of Okayama Japan and that is why we moved to Japan for 2011. Then my son could start nursery school here in Japan.

I was able get back to work after being laid off.

That was when I felt the urge to get back into  Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof Pass Proof the art world. I have always had this need to curate, collaborate with artists and constantly discover

New talent is visiting studios. It's my love. This is my favorite thing.

Additionally, I had to make money. I also had experience in international business. So my objective was to make use of my connections and draw on all my past experiences.

Experience in developing an efficient business model that I could be able to operate from Japan or any other location. In retrospect, the pandemic and subsequent resurgence of the

new norm of working from home and WFH This has actually helped me quite well.
